reminders secondary Reminders for iPhone: Review
Let me begin by saying that I have been using Reminders! for iPhone as my primary “Todo” app for a little more than a week now. Initially I was a bit underwhelmed as I have always used todo apps with (excessive) fancy bells and whistles. After a few short days, I really began to appreciate the simplicity of Reminders!. It has proven to be reliable, which is my number one priority when choosing a productivity app, and it has proven itself to be efficient. I have grown to truly love this app.

We are currently in a world where one man is constantly on a quest to one up the next man. Reminders! by www.RipeApps.com has done just this, but in a unique way. They have managed to create an app that is stripped of all “face value” features that clutter most apps on the app store. What we are left with is a highly efficient, simple todo app. One thing I noticed right away: I was not overwhelmed with push alerts reminding me of what I need to do. Some todo apps will flood your system with alerts to the point that it is annoying to use the application. Not Reminders!. They use a different type of notification which is simplified, effective and non intrusive. On the day that your “todo” is due, the badge count for the app will simply reflect an additional reminder. When the “due” time arrives, Reminders! will send you one push alert. Upon receiving the alert, you can tap a few options depending on how the “todo” was entered.

  • You can tap “Done”, which will remove the “todo” from your list and send it to your History page.
  • You can tap “Later”, which will simply dismiss the alert while maintaining the “todo” status of undone and reflecting it’s need to get done in the badge count
  • You can tap the “Action” displayed on the alert. They range from opening a web page to placing a phone call, sending an email, composing a text message etc..

What I love about the alert system is the fact that I can perform the action from the alert itself, without ever having to open the app to cross anything off or open a URL. Just tap “View”, to review the Todo and the actions associated with it, or tap “Close” to dismiss the notification. It is simple, and it’s convenient.

Setting up your Reminders! is easy peasy too. From the home screen, tap the “+” at the top right corner of the apps interface. Your first field will say “Where”, tap the input field to the right of the label to open up your action options. Choose from:Call, Meet, Email, Todo,Check, Buy, Pick Up, Delivery, Workout or SMS. For the sake of this review, we will be choosing “SMS”. You will notice that the Labels below have now changed to correspond with our choice of action.

Our next input field is “Who”. So, again, tap the input field and Reminders! will open your contacts in order to choose a contact to SMS. If the contact is not in your phone book, tap cancel to input the number manually. If you have chosen a contact from your phone book, Reminders! will add the name of the contact to the “Who” field and the phone number to SMS in the “Number” field. It’s really quite intelligent.

Now we move on to the next field which is “Time”. If you do not specify a time, the default time will be used. This default setting can be changed from the settings panel. This is the time that Reminders! will send a push notification to you, so be certain you set the time appropriately so not to miss important “todo’s”.

Lastly, there is a “Notes” field for you to jot down any remaining pertinent information or details. Now just tap save. It’s that simple.

Taking a look at the settings panel, you will notice Ripe Apps has placed icons for several methods of contacting them at the top of the page. Twitter, Facebook, Email and a few other options as well. They have also provided news on upcoming apps and a link to their current website. Below this, you will find “Alert Sound”. This is the sound used to alert you when the push notification for your “todo” comes through. There are currently twenty to choose from. From here you can also set your “Default Time”, the time that shows in your “todo’s” by default. Mine is set for tomorrow at 9:00 am. I rarely create Reminders! due the same day, so this works best for me. You may also choose to enable the “Snooze” option from the settings panel. This will enable you to choose “Snooze” from the push notification. When you choose snooze, it automatically adjusts the time set on the reminder to correspond with the snooze time you have set. Snooze times range from 5 minutes to 24 hrs.

There is really only one thing I would like to see from Reminders!. That being an option to input an address for pickup, delivery or meet, that would open directions in Google Maps upon selecting the action. User interface could use a little more pizzazz, but is just fine where it is currently. In no way is it distracting or unimpressive, it just may be a nice feature to have the option to choose color schemes. Other than that, it’s a great app and really worth every penny. You will hear no complaints from me. Thanks for a great app, Ripe Apps.
